Facility

Located on 320 acres along Bruce County Road # 13, six buildings mark the heart of the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre.

THE LODGE
Our Lodge sleeps between 40 and 60 people, and boasts locally crafted cedar bunk-beds and furniture.  The Lodge houses two dormitory-style rooms sleeping 18 people each, plus 8 smaller rooms that each sleep 4 people.  Washroom facilities with showers are available in each wing.
The dining room seats approximately 80 – 100 people, depending on the room configuration.
The Lodge was completed in 2006, and was built entirely on community support. Many individuals, businesses, community organizations, and schools fundraised in support of the BWDSB and Bluewater Education Foundation to make this dream a reality.

THE BRUCE POWER ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CLASSROOMS
This facility is steps away from The Lodge, and houses three separate classrooms.  The building is equipped with program supplies, internet access, and washroom facilities.  It was completed in 2007 thanks to a generous $500 000 donation to the Bluewater Education Foundation from Bruce Power.

THE E.S. FOX OBSERVATORY
The roof of the E.S. Fox Observatory moves!  That's right, the roof rolls back onto trusses, exposing the telescopes inside to the night sky!  The astronomy observatory is operated in partnership with the Bluewater Astronomical Society (BAS), whose club members are very generous with their time and knowledge.  School groups take advantage of astronomy evening programs at "The Fox", and those from outside of the BWDSB who are interested may also contact BAS through their website to set up an evening of star-gazing.
The astronomy observatory was completed in 2011 thanks to a generous donation from E.S. Fox.  Additional sponsors, BAS volunteers, and the Bluewater Education Foundation were also instrumental in getting this project off the ground.  Further funds from the Trillium Foundation and various fundraisers have allowed BAS to furnish the observatory with astronomy equipment.
In an exciting partnership with the University of Western Ontario in London, meteors travelling over the E.S. Fox Observatory are tracked from the E.S. Fox Observatory, and recorded for scientific research.

THE MASON BARN
Our barn is the crowning jewel of our physical facilities and is probably the most loved barn in Bluewater.  This original pioneer barn, constructed by the Mason family in 1886 (with an additional wing added on in 1913), provides a unique learning space all year long, as well as a shelter for imclement weather days.  This versatile facility can be used for barn dances and pioneer activities, team-building, preparation for winter sports, and so much more.  Aside from the odd squirrel and barn swallow, no animals live in the barn.

THE MASON HOUSE
The Mason House was built in 1907 by William Mason for his wife, Cicely. Unfortunately Cicely passed away before the east wing could be added, and as William once said, “after that the heart just went out of the place”. He never finished the house, but it remains a comfortable and solidly constructed farm-house with a beautiful stone façade, and original woodwork inside. The house is now home to our staff office facilities, and it accommodates staff who are working overnight.

SPRY LAKE CABIN
Sitting on the shores of Spry Lake, The Spry Lake Cabin serves as a support building for overnight camping programs.  A wood stove in Spry Cabin enables it to be used in late fall, winter or early spring. Portable toilets provide washroom facilities.  Drinking water is brought in. A covered porch area provides shelter for cooking on campstoves on stormy days.
